Mini-grants and Scholarships

Conference Scholarships

Limited scholarship awards are available to NAME members and college students in need of financial assistance to attend our annual conferences. Scholarship funds can help with all or part of the conference registration fee and travel costs (an effort will be made to set up carpools). No lodging stipend is available, but sharing accommodations is encouraged to reduce costs. See application for details.

Criteria: Scholarship awards are based on financial need and applicability of conference content to career/future career of the applicant. Applicants must not be a voting member of the NAME Board of Directors, or a Contributing Member (organization, institution or corporation membership), and must not have been awarded a scholarship for the last three NAME Annual Conferences.

Selection and Award: All applications for NAME scholarships are confidential and will be seen only by the NAME Scholarship Committee, made up of NAME board members and past scholarship recipients. Applications for scholarships are accepted through noon on the 1st of July. Applications received after July 1 will be awarded as funds permit. Successful applicants will complete the regular conference registration form, indicating in the space provided that they are scholarship recipients and are deducting the scholarship amount from the total due.

Conference Registration: Scholarship applicants can register for the conference at any time and defer payment until scholarship decisions are made. If a scholarship award is not granted and an applicant decides not to attend the conference, he or she may withdraw their registration with no penalty through July 7.

Application: To apply, please complete the scholarship application for the 2016 conference and submit it by July 1, 2016. Please contact Fawn Custer (envtgsldrfawn@aol.com) for more information.

Bill “Sean” Hastie Conference Scholarship Fund

Bill "Sean" HastieBill Hastie, founding member and tireless supporter of the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME), passed away in May 2012. During his 36 years with the organization, he was continually advocating for funding support for those members who because of cost, might not otherwise have a chance to attend our annual conference. As a method of honoring Bill's remarkable legacy, this scholarship fund has been established to advance our organization's cause of making known the wonders of the world of water one drop at a time, for those generations following after us.  The scholarship committee will choose an applicant they feel will inspire and instill the same sense of awe that Bill did with all those whose lives he touched.

Recipients of this scholarship may be a non-NAME member (in which case the scholarship will include a one year membership); or a current NAME member interested in becoming active or more involved in the national marine educators association (NMEA).

NAME Conference

Scholarship funds awarded for the regional NAME conference can be used for registration, travel, and/or lodging, and is based on availability of funds annually in this scholarship fund.

NMEA Conference

Scholarship funds awarded for the NMEA conference is based on a total of 75% of the total registration costs for the said conference and is also based on availability of funds annually in this scholarship fund.

Those recipients of scholarships are expected to submit a written report with photos of their experience to the scholarship chair within 60 days of the closure of the conference which they attended.
